Karta Polaka: how to obtain it, which documents you need
Karta Polaka — a document that confirms belonging to the Polish nation. It is not a residence permit and not «a right to live in Poland straight away»: to come and stay you need a national visa or another lawful basis.
With a Karta Polaka it is easier to get a D visa, work without a work permit, study almost like Polish citizens, and later file for Permanent residence with a Karta Polaka — already through MOS. Karta Polaka: who can obtain it?
A Karta Polaka is usually granted if there are Polish roots: a parent, a grandparent or two great-grandparents were Polish or held Polish citizenship. Family stories are not enough — you need papers: certificates, archives, records.
Without direct documents on origin the path is harder: the law allows a card for active involvement in the Polish diaspora, the language and knowledge of the culture — as a rule with confirmation from a Polish organisation.
You file at a consulate for your place of residence abroad, or with the voivode in Poland, if you are already here lawfully. This is not MOS: MOS is for residence cards, not for a Karta Polaka.
The rules are in the Karta Polaka Act of 2007 (as later amended).

Karta Polaka: documents and requirements
The pack is always built around your history. Most often you need:
- the applicant’s birth certificate;
- certificates of parents, grandparents and, if needed, great-grandparents;
- documents on Polish origin or citizenship (civil-status records, archives, service, study, work in Polish institutions);
- a passport;
- an application on the form;
- at the interview — Polish and knowledge of the culture, not «a certificate instead of a conversation».
If you go through the diaspora rather than through roots — confirmation from a Polish organisation and a real link to the culture.
Documents for filing must be in Polish (a sworn translation). We will say which papers are worth looking for, and we will not send you to collect the whole archive «just in case».
How obtaining a Karta Polaka works
After filing you are called to an interview at the consulate or with the voivode. It is in Polish: the language, traditions, history. Without this stage the card is usually not granted.
We prepare you for the interview in advance — not on the day of the appointment. The decision is taken by the consul or the voivode, not by us.
What advantages does a Karta Polaka give?
With a Karta Polaka you can usually:
- obtain a national D visa in order to arrive lawfully;
- work in Poland without a separate work permit (if your stay is lawful);
- study on terms close to those for Polish citizens;
- file for permanent residence — already through MOS; that is a separate procedure;
- in some cases apply for cash assistance on moving — not automatically «for everyone at once»;
- visit state museums free of charge.
A Karta Polaka itself does not replace a residence card. First the card and a basis for stay, then permanent residence if that is your plan.
A Karta Polaka without roots: is it possible?
A Karta Polaka without direct documents on roots is possible if you are genuinely tied to Polish culture: the language, traditions, involvement in Polish organisations. They often ask for a certificate from such an organisation about your involvement.
This is not a bypass «instead of the archive». If the papers are thin, we will say honestly whether it is worth filing now or whether to close the gaps first — language, membership, documents.
Renewing a Karta Polaka: when and how
The card is usually issued for 10 years. For minors the term may be shorter — until the age of 18, then the card is obtained again. Belonging to the nation does not «expire», but the plastic card needs to be replaced on time.
The card is replaced or renewed if:
- the term has ended;
- you have turned 18;
- the card was lost (a duplicate);
- your details have changed (surname, identity document).
You file at a consulate or with a voivode in Poland. In practice the application is often accepted no earlier than 3 months before the end of the term — we will check the exact booking date for your case.
You usually need an application, the current card, a photo and a passport; if filing in Poland — proof of lawful stay. The whole roots archive is not always collected again. A second interview is often not set if nothing has changed, but they can still call you.
We accompany the renewal, so you are not left without a card in the gap. We do not promise that this is «a pure formality in a week».
A Karta Polaka for Belarusians, Ukrainians and citizens of other countries
Most often people come to us from Belarus, Ukraine, Kazakhstan and other countries — if there are Polish roots or a living link to the culture. Citizenship itself neither grants the card nor bars it: we look at the documents and the language.
