Polish citizenship: how to obtain it on all grounds
Polish citizenship — is not a single procedure. Someone is already a citizen by blood and only needs confirmation. Some people go through recognition (uznanie) after permanent residence or a Karta Polaka. For others marriage, an EU long-term resident card, repatriation or an application to the president is a better fit.
Each path has its own set of years, documents and language under the Polish Citizenship Act. People most often confuse roots with a Karta Polaka, and permanent residence with a passport. We will help you choose a real ground, gather the pack and take the case through to a decision.
Residence cards from 2026 are filed through MOS. Citizenship itself is not filed there: the application goes to the voivode, a consulate or through the president’s chancellery, depending on the path.

Who can obtain Polish citizenship?
1. Confirmation of citizenship (potwierdzenie)
If a parent was a Polish citizen at the moment of your birth and the chain was not broken (the acts of 1920, 1951 and 1962, emigration, service in a foreign army can interrupt the status), you may already be a citizen without naturalisation. A B1 exam is usually not needed. What you need is a genealogy with certificates and records.
2. Recognition as a citizen (uznanie za obywatela) — the most common path if you do not yet have citizenship:
- about 3 years permanent residence or EU long-term resident status, housing, a stable income, Polish B1;
- with a Karta Polaka — often 1 year of permanent residence, then recognition (first Permanent residence via a Karta Polaka, that is not yet a passport);
- marriage to a Polish citizen — usually 3 years of marriage and 2 years of permanent residence or an EU long-term resident card, plus the language;
- separate time limits for international protection — not to be confused with a humanitarian residence permit.
3. Obtaining citizenship through the president (nadanie) — a presidential decision, not a guaranteed fast-track naturalisation. We take it if other paths do not add up, and we talk about the risks in advance.
4. Repatriation — a narrow law for Polish origin from specific territories, not a substitute for a Karta Polaka.
Polish citizenship for Ukrainians, Belarusians, Kazakhstanis and others is the same right: we look at the documents and the stay status, not the citizenship in the current passport.

There is no universal list for everyone. First we choose the procedure, then the papers.
Almost always: an application, a passport, birth certificates (yours and along the line), sworn translations into Polish, sometimes an apostille.
For confirmation of citizenship: a chain of records to an ancestor-citizen, documents on names and surnames, sometimes archives from Poland, Ukraine, Belarus, Lithuania, Kazakhstan. We check whether citizenship was interrupted in the chain.
For recognition (uznanie): a permanent residence card or an EU long-term resident card, housing, income, a Polish not lower than B1 from the recognised list, not a certificate from a language course.
For the Karta Polaka path: a valid Karta Polaka and permanent residence of the right length. A Karta Polaka itself does not confer citizenship.
For marriage: a marriage certificate, residence cards, the period of life together in Poland — on the documents.
Filing for citizenship is not MOS. If you still need permanent residence before a passport, that is exactly what we file through MOS. We will assemble a checklist for your path and will not make you sit B1 if you only need confirmation.
Ways to obtain Polish citizenship — a breakdown of the paths
Polish citizenship with a Karta Polaka. The usual scheme is: Karta Polaka → entry and permanent residence through MOS → about a year permanent stay → recognition as a citizen. The language for uznanie is as a rule still confirmed.
Polish citizenship by roots / origin. These are two different things. If an ancestor was a citizen and the status reached you — we confirm citizenship. If there is Polish nationality but there was no citizenship — more often first permanent residence by ancestry, then uznanie after about 3 years, or a Karta Polaka if that is faster. We do not mix these paths in one application.
Polish citizenship through marriage. The legal guide: marriage to a Polish citizen of at least 3 years and at least 2 years of permanent residence or an EU long-term resident card. We count the time on the documents.
Polish citizenship with a permanent residence card. The usual guide is 3 years of permanent residence or an EU long-term resident card, income, housing, B1. Not two years for everyone. Exceptions — a Karta Polaka (a year) and marriage (two years of permanent residence with three years of marriage).
EU long-term resident. For recognition it often plays the same role as permanent residence: its own 3 years of status.
Children. Sometimes they file with a parent or acquire citizenship another way. We look at each person separately: there is no automatic citizenship for all minors.

How to obtain Polish citizenship: a step-by-step outline
We will work out who you are for the law: already a citizen, a candidate for uznanie, a Karta Polaka path, marriage, repatriation or the president.
We will gather the archive and the stay status. If you need permanent residence before citizenship — MOS first, not the other way round.
Translations, an apostille where needed, a B1 certificate — only if the procedure requires it.
We will file with the voivode or a consulate (citizenship is not through MOS) and take the case through to a decision.
After a positive decision we will say how to arrange a Polish passport — that is already a separate step.
The exam for Polish citizenship
For recognition as a citizen (permanent residence, an EU long-term resident card, marriage, and often the Karta Polaka path) you usually need a state Polish not lower than B1.
For confirmation existing citizenship an exam is as a rule not required: we prove origin and continuity of status.
The exam is an oral part, writing, grammar, at authorised centres. We will say whether you need to sit it now or first close permanent residence / a Karta Polaka, so the certificate does not expire before filing.
Who we help obtain Polish citizenship
We support different working schemes:
- those who suspect they are already a citizen and want the chain checked — Ukrainians, Belarusians, citizens of the Baltic states, Kazakhstan and other countries;
- holders of a Karta Polaka who still need permanent residence and a careful filing before a passport;
- those who already have permanent residence or an EU long-term resident card and it is time to count three years, income and B1;
- spouses of Polish citizens — we will check whether the 3+2 years line up;
- families where citizenship is needed for the children too: who can file together, who separately;
- those for whom repatriation or presidential nadanie makes sense at all.
If the aim is to live and work in the EU, it is sometimes faster to close permanent residence or a Karta Polaka, and put citizenship as the second stage.
Repatriation as a path to Polish citizenship
Repatriation is a separate law, not accelerated citizenship by ancestry. You usually need Polish nationality, a link to the territories from which ancestors were deported in the twentieth century, and a readiness to settle in Poland on a repatriation visa.
This is not a substitute for a Karta Polaka and not a bypass of uznanie. Whether the path fits — we look at the archive and the law.
Advantages of Polish citizenship
With Polish citizenship you can usually:
- obtain a passport and travel without a visa where a Polish document lets you in (the list of countries changes);
- live and work in the EU as a Union citizen;
- vote in elections in Poland (permanent residence does not give that);
- pass citizenship on to children — if the conditions of the law are met;
- handle everyday life more easily: PESEL, NFZ, studies, a business. Property is often available to foreigners anyway — citizenship is not the only key.
Poland generally allows dual citizenship. Whether your first passport stays valid is a question for the country of origin. We will warn you where that is critical, before filing.
