How to obtain permanent residence by ancestry
You usually need to show that a parent or a grandparent were Polish citizens or persons of Polish nationality. Family stories are not enough — you need certificates, archives, records.
If the papers are thin, sometimes Karta Polaka, and only then Permanent residence via a Karta Polaka.

A permanent residence card by ancestry: what it gives
The permit is indefinite. The plastic card is replaced every 10 years — that is an exchange of the card, not a new case «from scratch».
With permanent residence you can usually:
- live in Poland permanently;
- work without a separate work permit;
- use healthcare, school and a range of social rights — but without the voting rights citizens have;
- travel in Schengen as a residence-permit holder (the 90/180 rules), not «as on an EU passport»;
- later apply for citizenship — on the ancestry path the guide is often about 3 years of permanent residence; they still look at the language and the other conditions.
An EU long-term resident card is not issued by itself: that is a different status.
How we handle an ancestry case
We will check the certificates and the archive: the applicant and the Polish relative. We will say which papers are missing, before translation.
We will assemble the pack in MOS: scans, a digital photo, housing and the intention to live in Poland. Profil Zaufany or an electronic signature.
We will file the application in MOS. A booking for paper filing at the office is no longer needed.
We will accompany the summons appointment: fingerprints, a signature, the original passport. Then we handle the office’s requests.
A permanent residence card with a Karta Polaka
If you already have a Karta Polaka — that is a different ground, not «roots plus a Karta Polaka in one application». In detail: Permanent residence with a Karta Polaka.
With a Karta Polaka you can file for permanent residence without collecting years of temporary residence. Filing is also through MOS, while your stay is lawful. You need documents that you intend to live in Poland.
Citizenship with a Karta Polaka and permanent residence is often realistic after about a year of permanent stay — not «after 3 years, like everyone». We do not promise the office’s processing time: it depends on the voivodeship.
Mandatory documents for permanent residence:
We load the pack into MOS; we do not carry a stack of forms from the office.
- a passport — scans into the system, the original at the appointment;
- documents on origin: certificates, archives;
- housing and proof that you plan to live in Poland;
- a digital photo to MOS requirements;
- a Karta Polaka — only if you are going specifically on that ground, not «just in case».
Polish B1 certificates and «an interview like for a Karta Polaka» are usually not needed for permanent residence by ancestry. Translations must be sworn, into Polish. We will draw up a checklist for you, not a generic list from the internet.
The process and processing times
From 2026 the application is in MOS. Then a summons appointment at the office. An attorney cannot replace your fingerprints.
Timelines depend on the voivodeship. The guides «2 months on a Karta Polaka» and «up to a year on other grounds» float in practice — we say it as it is, with no guaranteed date on the card.
After the decision we will help you collect the card. Citizenship is the next stage, not a bonus «in the same window».

A permanent residence card in Poland for Ukrainians and foreigners
The path is open not «because you are from Ukraine or Belarus», but if there are documents on Polish roots or a Karta Polaka. Special UKR / CUKR status is a different story; we do not mix it with permanent residence by origin.
If the aim is stability for the family, we will work out which of you can go by ancestry at all, and who needs a family residence card.
An exam for a permanent residence card: do you have to sit it?
For permanent residence by ancestry and for Permanent residence with a Karta Polaka an exam in Polish is usually not required. It is not worth mixing this with a Karta Polaka: there the interview is in the language.
A B1 certificate is almost always needed for an EU long-term resident card and often for citizenship. If the language is weak and the aim is a passport, we will build the exam into the plan in advance, not on the day of the permanent-residence decision.
